In an industry where fame is fleeting and one hit wonders come and go, Latin music icons Amanda Miguel and Diego Verdaguer are still performing and attracting fans after more than 40 years in the business.
The singer-songwriter couple had a string of massive hits in the early 1980s, including Miguel's "Él me mintió" and "Así no te amará jamás," and Verdaguer's "Volveré" and "La Ladrona." Many of those songs have garnered new life thanks to YouTube, where their videos have hundreds of millions of views and social media, where they've developed a multi-million legion of fans.
The couple, who has sold more than 60 million records worldwide and have multiple gold and platinum certifications, performed regularly in the U.S. over the past 12 years. But they are kicking off their largest U.S. tour - 25 cities in 45 days - built around the nostalgia of their "golden era" music.
"Songs are what keep an artist relevant. Our songs have touched people's lives. They remember us, because many of our songs are tied to key moments in their lives. They connect us and makes them look forward to seeing us live in concert," says Verdaguer.
Now, they will relive some of those memories in the aptly titled "Siempre Juntos" (Always Together) tour, promoted in partnership with Live Nation.
"Always together because we have always shared a wonderful life, have a beautiful daughter together, and always collaborate and work together," says Miguel.
Married for over 43 years, Miguel and Verdaguer have enjoyed success in their solo careers, but they're a solid team that have worked collaboratively composing songs, performing and touring together, effectively navigating the upheaval and changing business model of the music industry thanks to their business acumen.
"We realized early on that we needed to start our own company," recalls Miguel. "We own the rights to our songs and can decide what's best for us."
The founded their record label DIAM Music (Di for Diego and Am for Amanda). They write, arrange, promote and produce their own records, some of which are distributed by Universal Music and Sony Music.
"If we had to depend on a record label, our music would be buried somewhere and we'd be struggling to get some crumbs for our work. I've seen it happen to other colleagues," states Verdaguer. "Making a good record still costs a lot of money. But since we own our music catalog, it continues to generate money we can reinvest into new songs we produce in our own studio."
Having their own music publishing and record label company was a smart move, explains Alfonso Larriva, an entertainment manager and former executive at Warner, Sony and Univision Music groups in Mexico.
"The music industry has drastically changed. Big record labels today look to sign hot new talent with a ready-made audience, like Maluma or Ozuna," says Larriva. "If Amanda and Diego were to sign with a label today, they wouldn't be a priority. The best thing they can do is to lead their own projects with complete creative liberty. When your own the company, you're the top priority. And that's what they're doing effectively."
Miguel and Verdaguer estimate they have over half a million social media followers in the U.S. and are seeing fans from newer generations.
"We have an significant fan base in the United States that knows us and enjoys our music, which has been passed on from generation to generation, particularly by Mexican immigrants, but also from other countries," says Verdaguer. "It's a cultural phenomenon."
"I've seen little girls singing my songs and uploading them on YouTube," says Miguel with wonder. "We started our careers in an era of music glory. In the 80s, our songs were hits that played non stop on the radio. We never stopped working and we continue to see our music still lives in people's hearts."
The couple's daughter, singer Ana Victoria, will be a guest performer in 10 shows of the "Siempre Juntos" tour, which starts in Los Angeles on September 28.
